Covenfolk
Conor
Conor is the current autocrat. Members of his family have been in that position since the covenant was founded. Conor is currently approx. 35 years old and has been autocrat since his father died 3 years ago. He's a competant autocrat and a personable enough man, though bored with both his position and his family and secretly harbours a desire to travel. He compensates by drinking too much too often and since his father's death has been systematically looting the Au vis source (as his family have always done) being careful to leave the 4 pawns the covenant expects. He uses these extra feathers to drug himself into a trance. His wife, Mary, knows about his habit but can't do anything and covers for him for fear of them all losing their home should it be found out.
Richard
Richard is the turb leader, and has been for several years (he is currently in his early thirties). Trained within the covenant, he has worked his way 'up the ranks' and commands a considerable amount of respect with the other guards. He is a competant leader of the men, and as his only home has been the covenant he is utterly loyal to the point of fanaticism. He has a short temper and can be goaded to violence if others insult his home. He knows that those where he works are 'a little strange' but is now well used to it, and is unfazed by anything that happens there.
Malik
Malik is an ungifted redcap, five years out of apprenticeship. Born in Northern Africa, he was captured as a child by a Christian Spanish covenant, and trained as a redcap by a sympathetic master. The leader of the covenant knew Placidus and so when Malik passed his gauntlet it was arranged for him to join Flamma Aeterna, as he would be safer there from prejudice than Spain. Malik, as ungifted, is not allowed to join the Concilium or to take full status as a magus, but his duties are not onerous and he lives comfortably. He resents not being able to join the council, and grudgingly recognises why, but for the moment is unlikely to protest to loudly. He is being encouraged to take an apprentice from the covenant children as soon as possible to ensure continuity of redcap support.
Elise
Elise is the librarian, concentrating mostly in the mundane library, but also helping in the cataloguing of the arcane library. Elise was brought up in the covenant and is the only daughter of the previous turb leader, and was taught reading and a love of books from an early age by Thressa. Elise is probably not cut out fully for the ordered life of a librarian, but knows that to retain her position she must keep up her good work and consequently goes a little wild when not working. She is always forgiven, however, by Thressa who seems to see Elise as the daughter she never had.
Donal
Donal is the personal assistant to Scelus. He joined the covenant many years ago, at about the same time as Scelus became an ArchMage and has been a devoted servant since. He is fiercely loyal to Scelus and faithful to the covenant itself, and always used to travel with Scelus whereever he went. In recent years he has been of poor health, and his place on trips has been taken by his son Malcolm, who otherwise is a reasonably senior member of the turb.
Guy
Guy is Aequus' main contact for his agents and lives in Lancaster in a house bought with covenant money. He has been handsomely paid over the years and his son is expected to continue when his health fails him. While not loyal to the covenant in any sense (he doesn't realise who he is actually working for), he is loyal to Aequus, who has treated him well and with respect over the years, and does his job steadily and well, albeit not brilliantly. His son is more volatile, though more brilliant, but as yet has an uneasy relationship with Aequus. This should settle over the years though as he settles into the job and in the meantime, Aequus is very careful about monitoring both Guy and his son.
Grogs
There are one hundred guards and scouts, plus Richard and three lieutenants, as well as forty assorted servants including a blacksmith, a parchment maker and a book binder. They employ an illuminator for the library in 900. Mary acts as a housekeeper to organise the day to day running of the household. Most grogs are taken from the village if possible and many are children of previous grogs. This is to try and maintain stability and have grogs who will not be as disconcerted by the magi. All prospective employees are vetted by Thressa before joining the covenant, to check for potential spies, and random checks are carried out on all existing grogs on an ongoing basis. The grogs are not told of the true reason for these appraisals, but rather that they are interviewed to check that they are contented and fulfilled in their various roles. All grogs are well looked after and equipped, treated well and with respect and most are loyal to the covenant in return.
All members of the covenant are expected to be able to speak Latin. Those who are employed from outside are expected to learn the basics of Latin (simple commands etc) in the year or so after they join, and senior posts are only available to those who can speak Latin fluently. Those born and raised in the covenant are effectively bilingual in Latin and English.
